Adria Ferries renews its fleet for a sustainable future
Adria Ferries has decided to renew its fleet and work towards a sustainable future, in order to make its own tangible contribution to protecting natural resources. In addition to presentation of the new AF Claudia ferry at the press conference held on 18 November 2019, the company also presented the new equipment fitted on board its fleet to drastically reduce the environmental impact, based on the cornerstones of the company vision: state-of-the-art technology and sustainability. Adria Ferries has, in fact, always focused on the development of innovative solutions that contribute to protecting the environment and all its lifeforms.
Adria Ferries launches the new AF Claudia
2,040 linear metres with space for 140 lorries and 75 cars, 950 passengers and 76 cabins, at a speed of 22 knots: these are just some of the features of the new AF Claudia, the most recent investment of Adria Ferries on the Ancona to Durrës line. This ferry will offer the company the chance to try out a new range of integrated and more evolved services than ever before, in line with the company vision of enhancing the travelling experience of its passengers, whom it has never viewed simply as customers, but as guests on board its vessels.
The new AF Claudia will be the location for a number of innovative projects to ensure all adults and children on board have a comfortable and entertaining journey with quality, safety and professionalism.
The best word to describe this new entry is state-of-the-art, as the company has focused on innovation and technology to develop and improve the ferry service it operates between Italy and Albania and has scheduled restyling and extension, presumably by the end of summer 2020. The extension, which will almost double the current passenger capacity, will be accompanied by a complete review of the concept of common areas, with an approach that will certainly be more “passenger friendly”.
Numerous entertainment activities have been planned to accompany guests during their journey (including the children’s area, the snack bar, free Wi-Fi, Duty-Free shop), together with the excellent on-board catering service offering 100% Italian cuisine, prepared by top chefs with decades of experience and the result of a careful choice of raw materials.
Adria Ferries is espousing the concept of “sustainable travel”, in line with the new IMO 2020 regulation on reduction of sulphur emissions by ships, by renewing the discharge systems on its fleet and thus making a tangible contribution to protecting natural resources: the AF Claudia has, in fact, been fitted out with scrubbers, devices used to ‘wash out’ exhaust gases with sea water and thus drastically reduce the quantity of sulphur present in the fumes produced.
The new AF Claudia is therefore not only distinguished by the range of services, comfort and speed it offers, all features that guarantee navigation of the highest quality standards, but also by its sustainability, one of the cornerstones of a business model based on development of technologies that reduce the environmental impact of polluting emissions.

An increasingly green fleet: Adria Ferries presents the Scrubbers
In response to the 2020 Low Sulphur Cap that will come into effect on 1 January next year, and as the first in the port of Ancona, Adria Ferries has decided to act before the deadlines laid down by law and renew the discharge systems on its fleet, in order to make its own tangible contribution to protecting natural resources.
According to the IMO Regulation, ships flying any flag must use fuels with a sulphur content under 0.5% (mass by mass), compared with the 3.5% tolerated until now, with the aim of reducing the atmospheric pollution caused by ship emissions.
In order to allow shipping companies to satisfy the requirements laid down by the end of 2020, the regulation provides them with the following options:
1. use a fuel with a low sulphur content (0.5%) or marine gasoil (MGO)
2. use alternative fuels, such as LNG or sulphur-free bio-fuels
3. equip the ships with gas cleaning systems (“scrubbers”) that allow them to operate using fuel with a high sulphur content (HSFO).
Keeping faith with its mission, the ferry company has equipped two of its vessels, the AF Marina and the AF Claudia, with the gas cleaning systems called scrubbers, which drastically reduce the quantity of sulphur present in the fumes produced, using sea water.
Scrubbers offer numerous benefits compared with the other alternatives proposed by the regulation:
- considerable reduction in the particles of atmospheric pollutants that are harmful for the environment, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs);
- elimination of a large part of the soot coming out of the funnels, which has a negative impact on air quality and therefore on human health;
- no added pollutants that are harmful to the water;
- monitoring of the PH parameters, turbidity and PAHs present in the water being discharged;
It is therefore easy to see how use of exhaust gas cleaning systems like scrubbers can result in a considerable reduction in the harmful substances produced by those gases, not just sulphur, but also atmospheric pollutants and other materials that would otherwise be released into the air.
Choice of these technologies ensures that Adria Ferries complies not only with the regulations, but also with the cornerstones of its company vision: state-of-the-art technology and sustainability. The company has, in fact, always focused on responsible management of its activities, ensuring development of innovative solutions that contribute to protecting the environment and all its lifeforms.
