Adria Ferries secures its fleet
Adria Ferries is securing its entire fleet and has prepared a “Cyber Security Management Plan” for each individual vessel.
Innovative processes in the field of robotics and automation, artificial intelligence and communication technologies are revolutionising all industrial sectors, including the maritime sector, and cyber security is playing an increasingly important role, due to the considerable risks to which potential vulnerability of their computer systems exposes port systems and the shipping sector. The greater needs for real-time connectivity, to provide information as needed and optimise both shipping operations and customer experience and satisfaction, are broadening the area of cyber attacks and making them potentially more lethal. It is clear that, in this situation, the adoption of measures that guarantee the security of the operators and the information they manage via on-board systems is a pressing issue in the maritime sector as well.
In June 2017, the impact of these risks was clearly highlighted by the international cyber attack by hackers that rendered the computer systems of many firms inaccessible and also affected the shipping industry.
In order to deal with these risks and proceed with correct management of the cyber risk, in compliance with the IMO regulation that will come into force on 1 January 2021, Adria Ferries has prepared a specific “Cyber Security Management Plan” for each vessel, which will be inspected during the first annual D.O.C. audit due to take place in 2021.
The Plan is organised as follows:
1. National regulations (CGCdP-Port Authority General Command) and international regulations (IMO);
2. Company “Cyber Security” Policy;
3. Plan;
4. Specific Company Audit, Familiarisation and Maintenance Forms.
The Cyber Security Management Plan will be kept by the officer responsible for on-board cyber security, for ISM. The IT department will be responsible for maintenance of the hardware on board the vessels, familiarisation of the crew and annual audits for implementation of the system.
